Friendly Match Vs New England Revolution

New England Revolution 1-4 Manchester United: Macheda, Owen & Park give Ashley Young a victory to savour on his debut

Winger's first game for the Red Devils ended on a positive note as they managed to put four past their opponents and register a victory in their first game of pre-season

The game was the first of the 2011 World Football Challenge, which also features Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City among other teams.

The match at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, saw Ashley Young make his first appearance for his new club since moving to Old Trafford from Aston Villa. The Red Devils managed to begin the game by dominating possession, with the hosts seeing very little of the ball during the first 10 minutes. But as time passed, the American side managed to slowly settle down and keep Sir Alex Ferguson's men from taking the lead. With a little over 20 minutes having been played, Pat Phelan's effort from outside the box was saved at the bottom left corner. And at the other end, Dimitar Berbatov fired a shot off target.

The visitors were putting in a strong performance and creating enough chances, but were having trouble in the attacking third of the pitch as they were unable to put the ball in the net. Berbatov, Fabio, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick all saw their shots go wide of the mark within a span of seven minutes. The two teams went into the break level, and Sir Alex brought on Owen and Macheda for Rooney and Berbatov for the second half.Owen managed to give his side the lead within a matter of minutes, as he converted an assist from Carrick to send the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. Less than five minutes had passed when Macheda joined in on the action, as he capitalised on another good pass from Carrick to put the ball past the goalkeeper. It was beginning to rain goals at the Gillette Stadium as a free kick from Benny Feilhaber took a wild deflection from Mansally to give Steve Nicol's charges something to cheer about.

A little past the hour mark, Rafael sent in a cross that took a deflection and fell into the path of Macheda, and the Italian hitman had no trouble letting loose a left-footed shot to put his side 3-1 up. The 19-year-old had a chance to net a hat-trick as Young sent in a cross, but the final effort was found wanting as the shot was off target. As if to showcase their experience, Ryan Giggs and Park combined superbly as the South Korean added another goal to make the inevitable victory all the more emphatic.

As the referee brought the game to a halt, United had entertained over 50,000 fans and managed to get a good start to their pre-season.

Brown and O'Shea join Black Cats

Sunderland have signed Manchester United defenders Wes Brown and John O'Shea on four-year deals.

Brown, 31 has joined the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee, understood to be in the region of £1m.
Manager Steve Bruce said:

"We are delighted to welcome a player of Wes' ability, experience and character to the club."He has been a fantastic professional for Manchester United through the years and not only will he strengthen our defensive options, he will also bring with him a winning mentality and level of maturity which can only be positive for the players around him."

The defender made 361 senior appearances for United over 15 years as a professional having joined the club as a 12-year-old, and has five Premier League winners' medals. Brown won 23 England caps before announcing his retirement from the international game last summer. He will bring a welcome versatility and vast experience to the Stadium of Light, where his arrival will go some of the way to making up for the loss of loan signings Nedum Onuoha and John Mensah.

Ostensibly a central defender, he can also play at right-back and with O'Shea, equally comfortable across the back four as well as in midfield, Bruce could have healthy options at the back next season.Bruce said of O'Shea, who also joins for an undisclosed fee: "John has been a solid, consistent part of Manchester United's squad for well over a decade which goes to show the fantastic pedigree of player we have signed.

"He is a wonderful professional both on and off the field and his wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributes for us. I'm delighted with the players we've been able to secure ahead of the new season."

O'Shea said: "Once I'd heard reports about the club and the people here, the ambitions and what the manager was all about it was the only place I was going to come to."

Football United

Little Jack Marshall is lying in his bed in the front room of his parents' house. His head is resting on a Manchester United pillow case. He is wearing his Manchester United shirt.A giant United flag covers the wall behind him. His mum and dad put it up for the Champions League final last month and they have not been able to bring themselves to take it down.Jack is five years old but because of the severity of the treatment he has endured for the cancer that is killing him, he can only speak in a whisper. So when I ask him who his favourite player is, I can see his eyes sparkle but I have to kneel beside him to hear his answer.

"Rooney," he says. "When I met him, I told him he was the best player in the world. And I asked if I could give him a kiss."Rooney bowed his head low that day a few weeks ago at United's Carrington training ground so that the brave little boy's wish could be granted.

But then football has brought Jack joy throughout his short life. It fills many of his family's happiest memories of him.He learned to walk by kicking a football. His mum, Tracey, held him by his hands as he staggered round the house as a toddler, swinging his foot at a ball then tottering after it and kicking it again.

Then there was the time his parents took him and his older brother, Josh, to Old Trafford to watch his first game against Blackburn Rovers when he was three. Jack rode down Sir Matt Busby Way on the shoulders of his dad, Craig, and even though it was a cold December night, he refused point blank to wear a jumper over his United shirt.Craig and Tracey worried that people were looking at the shivering little lad and thinking they were bad parents but Jack was so proud of that shirt, he wouldn't let it be covered up.At home in Scunthorpe, he lived for football even then. He went to the local Footy Monsters kids' group every week without fail. The coaches there said they had never seen a little boy who loved the game so much.

Even after all their lives changed in October 2009, somehow it was football that brought them the most comfort.Jack kept waking in the night, being sick. The doctors thought it was a virus. It kept happening. They still thought it was a virus. Then, one day, Jack lost the use of his legs.So he had a scan and they discovered he had a brain tumour and an aggressive form of cancer that had already spread to his spine. He survived a 10-hour operation to remove the primary tumour. Then he had to endure drastic chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment to try to stop the disease raging.

While he was recovering from the trauma of the operation, the doctors made special arrangements for him and his family to watch a United-Chelsea game on the television."It meant we could just sit as a family and watch something Jack loved," Craig said. "It brought some normality to the most extreme of abnormal situations."
When Jack was finally allowed to go back home to Scunthorpe, still desperately ill and unable to walk, there was a surprise waiting for him
.
His mum and dad had met Sir Alex Ferguson at the Tankersley Manor Hotel in South Yorkshire while they were having a couple of hours away from the hospital.United were there preparing for a Carling Cup tie against Barnsley and Sir Alex had spoken to Tracey about Jack and asked for her address. When Jack was wheeled back into the house, there was a box of United paraphernalia sent by Sir Alex. Amongst it, there was a football with the club crest emblazoned on it.

So Jack learned to walk all over again, using the same method he had used as a toddler. This time, he had a walker, a kind of mini Zimmer frame, and he chased that United football all over the house until he could stand unaided again."He used that football every single day in his rehab," Tracey said, "because it had the United crest on it. His physios used to joke with him about it all the time."

By March this year, Jack had been brought so low by the cancer that doctors told Tracey and Craig he only had a couple of days left to live.He came home again to the bed in the front room and the television and the football. And the couple of days turned into weeks and now the weeks have turned into months. And as Jack lay there, surrounded by the love of his family, football began to give something back to the little boy who had given so much to it.

Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and many others have helped to grow him an army of nearly 40,000 followers on Twitter and publicise the fact that brain tumours kill more children than any other form of cancer.
Jack Wilshere has shown a maturity and a concern beyond his years, staying in touch with Jack and his family and wearing a wristband to draw attention to fund-raising efforts on little Jack's behalf. Rooney wore the wristband, too.Wolves fans took a huge banner with Jack's name on it to games so that Jack could see it as he lay in front of the television. The banner was signed by Mick McCarthy and the Wolves side and given to Jack as a gift. And then there have been the messages on Twitter, from United fans, from Liverpool fans, from Manchester City fans, from fans of every team.

"People have written to us," Tracey says, "saying that they would never have believed it but they had found themselves wanting United to win because they knew it would make Jack happy."The end of the season was hard for the family. It showed that time was passing and sometimes all Craig and Tracey want is for time to stand still.

They have poured as much energy as they can spare into raising awareness, highlighting the fact that 1 in every 2500 children will develop a brain tumour and that the UK has only a 14% five-year survival rate. Now that the Premier League season is over, Jack watches MUTV and recordings of old matches, the England U21s, whatever snippets of football he can catch.

He is a beautiful child, still sweet-tempered and loving despite all the agonies he has been through, still blowing kisses to his mum's helper when she pops her head round the door to say goodbye.Sometimes he wears an expression of heart-breaking solemnity as though he cannot quite believe his life has been stolen from him like this.Sometimes, if you talk when he is trying to watch Peppa Pig, for instance, it is replaced by a flash of indignation. Sometimes, there are glimpses of the dashing, carefree kid he used to be

.When I have to go, I kneel by his bed again and confess to him that I once went to watch City regularly as well as United.Jack's eyes widen. "I don't like Manchester City," he whispers. And then he smiles.

Official: United Signs Young

Manchester United have completed the signing of England winger Ashley Young from Aston Villa on a five-year contract.

Young's move to Old Trafford, for a reported £16million fee, had been widely anticipated for some time after he announced that he was keen to play at the very highest level. The 25-year-old, who had also been targeted by Liverpool, underwent a medical with the Premier League champions on Wednesday and has now put pen to paper.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Ashley Young."The player passed a medical in Manchester this week and has agreed a five-year contract."He becomes Sir Alex Ferguson's second signing of the summer after the capture of England Under 21 international Phil Jones from Blackburn for £16.5million.

New challenge
Villa signed Young from Watford in January 2007 in a deal eventually worth £10million and he went on to score 38 goals in 190 appearances. However, he made it clear to Villa he would not be signing an extension to his contract, which was due to expire next summer, and the club had little alternative but to sell one of their prize assets."Ashley has made a terrific contribution for Villa over the past four and a half seasons and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future," new Villa manager Alex McLeish said."He has become an important player in the England team during that time and I'm sure he will be looking forward to this new challenge."

New team-mate Rio Ferdinand was quick to hail his international colleague's move to Old Trafford.Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "Welcoming Ashley Young to Manchester United. Another top, hungry and young player joins the ranks."

Manchester United 2011/2012 Kit Launch [Video]

Old Trafford stars talk about the club’s new kit, which looks quite sharp but not that dissimilar to last year’s design.

Official : England U21 Skipper is a Red Devil

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of the Blackburn defender Phil Jones on a five-year deal.
Jones passed a medical and agreed personal terms with United on Wednesday last week after the club met the £16m release clause in the player's contract, before Venky's, Blackburn's owners, stalled on the transfer amid interest from Liverpool.

However, Jones, apparently told Rovers he did not wish to join any other club than United.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce it has signed an agreement with Blackburn Rovers for the transfer of Phil Jones," said a United statement. "The player passed a medical in Manchester last week and has agreed a five-year contract.

"I've loved my time at Blackburn and I will always be a huge fan but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am looking forward to a new challenge," said Jones via Twitter.
